april / 7 months old!

7 months old--and two little teeth!

April has been a busy and exciting time at our house!  Our little man turned 7 months old and met all sorts of milestones this month.  With the arrival of his first two teeth, this cute guy's smile is forever changed--and, I dare say, even more adorable than ever.

Pre teeth--what a keeper!

I am happy to announce that Hunter made a major breakthrough with his sleeping recently--and not a moment too soon.  Here is the proof on the baby monitor!  On a recent Wednesday when their Mimi was babysitting, I told her to do whatever she thought was best as far as Hunter's napping that day (since I certainly didn't have a clue).  She cozied him up with his little baby pillow and blanket, and apparently his warm little cocoon was the key.  Slumber sweet slumber, thanks to Mimi.  It's still not perfect, as Hunter's naps remain a bit touch and go at times.  Nonetheless, I feel like this has been a huge development, and a huge relief.

First bedtime in her "big girl bed"--
not psyched.
Hunter isn't the only one whose sleep schedule needed a little work this month.  We took the major step of moving Harper from her crib into her very own "big girl bed."  We purchased a proper mattress for the daybed in her room, and we even took a special trip to Target so that Harper could help pick out her new sheets and pillows (how cute is the owl/forest creatures motif???).  She was SO excited to move into her big girl bed...until bedtime, that is.  Then there was a LOT of crying.  Borderline traumatic, in fact.  But after a few nights, it became old hat.  Our sweet girl is really and truly growing up!

She did it!
Night 1 in her very own bed

The next step will be to move Hunter into her crib.  I have to admit, Harper's challenging transition from crib to bed really threw me.  I didn't think it would be a big deal, and it turned out to be precisely that.  But I'm hoping that Hunter's move into Harper's room will be a good thing.  They continue to just adore one another, to snuggle and laugh. Hopefully that will be enough to trump any ownership Harper feels over her crib.  They do say that love conquers all, right?  And look how much love is here.  Our hearts are just so full.

Here are a few other highlights of our month:

Field trip!  On the first Friday of every month, The Discovery Museum offers free admission.  Dallin and Harper went there with our neighbors in the fall, shortly after Hunter was born.  Their visit sounded like such fun that I was determined to go back so that Hunter and I could see what all the fuss was about.  We met Dallin after work in the evening and had a great time--Harper especially.  She got to play at the water table and even stand inside a giant bubble.  She also got to experiment with different puzzles and climb to the top of a faux ship.  Perhaps the coolest part was riding on a dinosaur!  Harper has been asking to go back to "the zeum," as she calls it, ever since.  We will have to return when Hunter is old enough to participate; this visit, he was more of an onlooker.

Park play!
The great outdoors!  The park is probably Harper's favorite place, and now that the snow has finally melted, we are spending more and more time at the park.  We are so lucky that it's just down the street from our house.  Our park has two play areas, separated by a field.  On one side is a little kids' park, and on the other side is the big kids' park.  Harper has taken to dashing over to the big kids' side of the park because she loves the ridiculously tall slide.  In all honesty, the slide is so steep that it makes me nervous.  I don't like to go down, but Harper has no fear.  Well, until the other day...  While Grammy Eccles was in town, we were all at the park, and Harper turned to look at us while sliding down the big slide.  Turning somehow put her off balance, and she toppled to one side, bumping her face on the slide as she slid down.  Poor Harper was left with her very first black eye.  Her eye was bleeding, but she only started crying because we told her that it was time to go home (a bleeding eye is sort of a good reason, or so I thought).  What a champ.  Here is our wounded soldier:

Harper and Hunter get to spend a lot of time outside at school as well.  I can tell it has been a fun day when Harper is seriously dirty.  I consider a dirty face the sign of a truly happy kid.  And really now, who can resist this dirty face?

In New England, it can sometimes feels like winter will last forever, but with these amazing spring days upon us, we have been so happy to finally be outside, enjoying the sun and play dates with friends again.  Goodbye, hibernation!  Here are a few glimpses of our big adventures with little friends:

While at the park with our friend, George, Harper took off running across the field towards a youth soccer practice.  They had a bunch of little orange cones set up to run drills; Harper systematically picked up each cone, one at a time, and then threw them as far as she could.  Sigh.  It was one of those moments that I was tempted to say, "Just wait until I tell your mother!"  She, of course, thought it was just hilarious.  Naughty naughty.  My favorite moment was when Harper and George stopped, mid-field, for a hug.  Love these sweet little friends!

Big hugs, little friends

See-saw smiles

Sometimes it's all I can do to get us organized and out the door for a play date or appointment in one semi-presentable state. While the Wilsons may not always be the most glamorous bunch, we sure do have fun.  Our little family is certainly blessed with so much love. And we try to remember to laugh--a lot.

A little work...

...A little play

...And lots of laughs.

easter

We have had a busy yet fun Easter season this year!  As we planned for a visit from the Easter bunny, we had to remind Harper (again--not a fan of animals) that the Easter bunny will bring treats but then promptly leave; poor girl didn't want to run into a large bunny at her house.  We have also been talking about the Easter story a lot, wanting to be sure Harper (and someday Hunter) never loses sight of the meaning of the holiday, the atoning sacrifice that Christ made for mankind.

A few glimpses of our family's Easter festivities this year...

It began with an invitation to Harper's very first Easter party. She was so sweet, in her new Easter dress from Mimi.  She learned how to sing "Little Bunny Foo Foo" (now a favorite--especially the "bopping" part) and "Here Comes Peter Cotton Tail;" made cute Easter crafts; and even wore a special little bunny tail pinned to her dress.  Hunter was napping and stayed back home with Grammy Eccles while she was visiting, and it It was special for Harper and me to attend the party together--just us girls.

The following weekend, we all attended an Easter egg hunt at church. Harper was more excited about exploring the contents of the first egg she found and eating the candy than she was about finding more eggs.  Fortunately, she still managed to gather her fair share!  And she had fun scurrying around the lawn with friends on a beautiful Saturday morning.

On Easter Sunday, we began our day by visiting Harper and Hunter's Great Gramzy, who has been staying in a rehabilitation facility since she had surgery after breaking her leg.  It was a beautiful morning so we wheeled Gramzy out to the courtyard for some sun.  We had a great visit, but we can't wait for Gramzy to be able to return home.  The staff is beyond nice there, but we can tell that Gramzy is longing for her own house--and more independence.  Hopefully she will be back on two feet soon

Cool kids

When we got back home, Harper and I set to work on making dough for sugar cookies so that it could chill while she and Hunter napped.  Here is a step-by-step look at our cookie-making adventures:

Mixing the dry ingredients
Blending dry and wet ingredients

While Harper and Hunter slept, Dallin and I chilled the dough and then baked the cookies so that we were all set for frosting when they woke up again.  Hunter, of course, let Harper manage the cookie frosting.  Maybe next year he'll join in too!

Frosting!

Our cookies turned out brilliantly, and we delivered plates to our neighbors--and we ate a bunch of them too!  Yum.  Happy Easter!

still boston strong

April 2013

Last year, Boston stood together as a city and a community, following the horrific Boston Marathon bombings and subsequent manhunt and lockdown.  That experience reminded all of us who live here in Boston how strong we are and can be.  One year later, the shirt still fits.  We are stronger than ever--and so is this sweet girl, who proudly says, "Mom, I'm Boston Strong."

a visit from grammy

Grammy snuggles
Harper and Hunter's Grammy Eccles came to visit us this past weekend, and we had such fun with her.  We took advantage of the beautiful weather, making frequent trips to the park, a road trip up to Maine to check out the outlets, and even a field trip to the aquarium.  While Harper has not been the biggest fan of animals in the past, the aquarium, as it turns out, is pretty much the ideal animal habitat for Harper, as there are thick panes of glass separating Harper from the marine life.  This made her feel safe and ignited her curiosity!  Believe it or not, she grew so comfortable that she even enjoyed touching the starfish and looking at the rays in the tidal pool area.  Yay!  Do we have a future marine biologist on our hands?

Grammy Eccles also made a very important introduction for Harper: the movie Frozen. We had a family movie night, complete with popcorn, and Harper has been singing, "Do you want to build a snowman?" ever since.

We were so sad to say goodbye to Grammy at the end of the weekend, and we are already looking forward to the summer, when we will see her again for our family's vacation to the Outer Banks.

feeling blue

There was a time when I put out the finger paints for Harper, and she requested a paint brush.  That time is long gone; this girl sure isn't afraid to get her hands dirty anymore.  We were having a bit of a tough morning, and so when Harper asked if she could paint, I figured, why not? Sometimes feeling blue isn't such a bad thing:

The aftermath: immediate bath required--
But oh how much fun we had!
