march / 18 months!

March is here, and it feels like the end of this eternal winter is finally in sight--hurray!

Little man

Our little Mr. Hunter reached his 18 month milestone, which is exciting, and he has a big personality to match his big boy status.  He had his 18-month well visit at the pediatrician. He measured 34.5 inches tall and weighed 32 lbs 6.4 oz.  These measurements put Hunter in the 98th percentile for height and the 100th percentile for weight.  Our pediatrician told us to keep an eye on his weight since it crept up above his height.  I have to say though, I feel like he only just started walking, and I think he is going to start to stretch out the more he is on the move.  He is a healthy boy for sure, but I haven't felt concerned.  So I'm trying to go with the flow on this one and to trust my maternal instinct.

Hunter is a guy on the go.  He's literally always moving, and for such a little person, it can be quite challenging keeping up with him!  I'm realizing that it can be hard to be a little brother sometimes.  Hunter wants in on all of Harper's activities, but he's not old enough to do a lot of them yet.  Dance class is the biggest one.  He will sit in front of the window, and you can see the longing on his face.  When the door opens or closes, he will make a beeline to try to get in.

Fortunately for Hunter, he has the best big sister ever.  She is sweet and patient, even at the tender age of 3, and she makes him laugh.  She is always including him, loving him, and sharing all of her favorite things.  He has inherited her obsession with the movie Frozen, and will excitedly yell "Olaf!" when he spots the little snowman.  He also loves to look at books with or without her.  Being a little brother to Harper is the best.

Hunter is also old enough now to attend nursery at church every Sunday, which is probably just as exciting for us as it is for him.  Until now, Hunter has had to attend the primary class that Dallin and I team-teach, and containing Hunter in a classroom is no easy job.  Now he gets to run and play in nursery instead, which is more fun for all parties involved.  When Harper started nursery, I was the nursery leader so she actually began early, entering at the same time that I did.  Because I was there with her, it didn't feel like a big event, but somehow it does for Hunter.  I was actually nervous for him, worried that he might be sad!  Which is crazy, I know--especially because he's been attending school without me since he was 3 months old.  He did a great job though, no surprise.  There is a basketball hoop in the gym that he is obsessed with, of course.  Enough said, right?

First day of nursery for our littlest h!

Harper had a big milestone this month too, with her first trip to the dentist!  Again, I was a little nervous about how she would do.  I mean, a stranger looking into her mouth--seems reasonable that a 3 year-old would be less than thrilled.  So in preparation for her appointment, I told her a little bit about the dentist, and I promised her a treat at the toy store afterwards if she did a good job (nope, I'm not above all out bribery).  As it turned out, I need not have worried--or bribed!  She was a total rockstar.  We were referred to the same pediatric dentist by both our pediatrician and our good friend so I knew we were in good hands, but it was a really positive experience for her.  The dental hygienist was so nice, with this tiny, sweet little voice.  She gave Harper a pair of sunglasses to wear during her appointment, described everything she was doing before she did it, and even let Harper brush the teeth of a little stuffed dragon.  On top of all of that, Harper also got to pick out a prize from the prize drawer at the end!  Our friend Lucie was watching Hunter back at home during this time so that I could focus on Harper during her appointment, not knowing how she was going to do; even though everything turned out perfectly, it was still a nice experience to be able to focus on Harper and participate in this milestone with her, with undivided attention.  A trip to the toy store felt like overkill when all was said and done, but a promise is a promise; she chose a pair of dress-up shoes that were too cute to pass up anyway.  Plus, I got to pick up a few Easter basket treats while we were there.

Cool kid at the dentist!

Harper's first bunny!
With Easter coming up, we have been in preparation mode with Easter crafts.  Harper's drawing skills continue to develop, and she really surprised us with the most adorable little bunny that she drew at school!  I mean, this bunny is definitely far cuter than any bunny that Dallin or I can draw.  I am pretty much obsessed with it, so much so that we used it for our Easter card to grandparents, aunts/uncles, and special friends.  It feels like Harper has definitely inherited her Grandpa Nick's artistic talent so it will be fun to see how that evolves over the years and if she remains interested in drawing and painting.  As it stands right now, she goes through stacks and stacks of paper.  I would be more concerned about the environmental impact of this, but who am I to stand in the way of creativity?  I love watching her projects develop.

Another new creative expression for Harper is hair.  She loves doing hair, whether it's her dolls, her own hair, mine, and especially our beloved friend/neighbor/babysitter Lucie; sweet Lucie is way more patient and seems to have a stronger scalp than I do.  In all honesty though, Harper's not half bad with her hair styling.  She has mastered the art of the hair elastic to do a ponytail, which is no small feat; she is probably better at ponytails than her dad is!  She also seems to be a big fan of the 80s style side ponytail...

...And the 80s are back!

Harper, Lillian, and Brenn (left to right)
at music class at Berklee

Something new that we have been doing for the past several weeks is a music class at the Berklee School of Music in Boston called Kids Jam.  It is run by the students of the music school, and each week the class is introduced to new types of music, different musical instruments, and fun songs that center around a weekly theme.  We learned about the class offering from my friend, who had taken it before with her daughter.  The real cherry on top is that the class is free!  Amazing.  Harper loves attending class with her friends, Brenn and Lillian.  It's been a major feat to get all the way downtown and parked on a Monday morning, but it's also a really great motivation to get out and moving.  We do frequent lunches at Max Brenner afterwards, which is a treat for the moms and the kids.  Technically, Hunter isn't "in" the class since it's for ages 3-5, but he attends with Harper by default, and gosh those kids love getting their hands on the instruments.  Hopefully they will end up more musically inclined than their mama, but regardless, it's great to see them having fun with it and learning new things.

Off to see Cinderella with this little Cinderella!

Our social little butterflies love getting together with friends.  No matter where we are going, Harper will ask me which friends will be there.  Our little Hs absolutely thrive on the energy and excitement of being around the people they love, whether it's at school, church, a play date, or even a trip to Costco.  This month, we did a special movie date to see the new Cinderella in theatres, which also meant getting to see the new Frozen  trailer (Harper's favorite part of the whole movie experience, as it turned out).  We saw the movie with Harper's little bestie, Brenn, and her big brother, Carder, and their mom of course.  Harper and Brenn both wore their own Cinderella dresses, making the movie field trip extra special. It was a really great movie, with a lovely cast, amazing costumes, and most importantly, an underlying message of courage and kindness that I will be glad to have my children learn about.  Which is good because we will probably own this movie eventually and watch it 7,000 times.

Welcoming spring!
This girl loves puddle stomping.

With April around the corner and Easter this weekend, it feels like spring is upon us.  We have managed to keep busy indoors for long enough and are itching to get outside to breathe the fresh air, run, and play.  But before we turn the calendar to April, here are a few other March moments that we want to remember:

Cabin fever!
Silly selfies taking over.
Mimi snuggles are the best!
Basking in the sun before dance class
on an unseasonably warm and sunny day!

Going down the bouncy slide at our friend Amelia's 4th birthday party!
Undone by the fun:
The time when Harper fell asleep while playing.
Friday dance class with Brenn is the highlight of our week!

Next up: April!  They say April showers bring May flowers...  We have rain boots, and we are so ready.  Let the melting begin!
